UPDATE 2nd March THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE EXHIBITION OF BINDINGS AT DORCHESTER MUSEUM 21/06/10 - 23/07/10 Some difficulties over the venue for the exhibition have now been resolved. Dorchester library who had agreed to host the exhibition eventually were forced to cancel the arrangement as funding issues meant that their display cases would not be replaced following a recent re-fit. However, we have now reached agreement with the town museum for the exhibition to be staged in their foyer. Although there is an admission charge to the museum itself, the foyer can be accessed by all free of charge. Dorset County Museum has the largest Hardy collection in the world, the bulk of which was bequeathed to the Museum by his second wife Florence Hardy. The most fascinating material from this collection, including manuscripts, books, diaries, photographs, notebooks and paintings, is on show in A Writer's Dorset. At the centre of the Gallery is the reconstruction of Hardy's study at Max Gate, with all his books and furniture, including his desk and pens. The Thomas Hardy Society, an independent organization also has an office in the building and they are very interested in the project and will circularise their membership to inform them about the exhibition........ see www.hardysociety.org The dates for the exhibition are from the 21st June to the 23rd July, although I'm told I must set up and remove the exhibition on the first and last dates. I am hoping that I may be able to extend that for a week to coincide with the 2010 International Thomas Hardy Conference will mark the 170th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Hardy and take place 24th July - 1st August and is designed to appeal both to Hardy scholars and to the lay readers who attend in large numbers. Workshops/tuition/masterclasses For those in our area taking part in the MoC project, there are a number of opportunities for attending binding workshops or masterclasses. I shall be running a special workshop here in the bindery for any binders who would like to meet up, discuss and try out particular techniques in order to progress their MoC binding. Please let me know if you are interested in attending. Kate Holland has also agreed to hold problem solving workshops in her bindery at Corston near Frome/Bath....either let me know if you'd like to receive further details or contact Kate direct at hollandswest@btinternet.com Please send in any useful information, notes, queries, thoughts about the project especially anything related to the book, the author Thomas Hardy or specific binding techniques. Maybe we should have a Mayor of Casterbridge blog, twitter or facebook so we can exchange information......does anyone know about such things? John John Jameson Cotswold Bookbinders John www.cotswoldbookbinders.co.uk 01285 770458 COTSWOLD BOOKBINDERS The Mayor of Casterbridge A good many binders had a great deal of fun and enjoyed the Binding Tarka project which culminated earlier this year with an exhibition of the bindings in Barnstaple Library. Following discussion between some of the binders involved with Tarka, we are going ahead with a follow-up. This time we have chosen another book set in the West Country, Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge. As Dorchester in Dorset is the real Casterbridge of Hardys’ book, the County Library in the town have agreed that we can stage an exhibition of the bindings there next year and we are looking towards May and June 2010. We hope to attract binders of all levels of competence to take part in this project. It is open to everyone, experts and novices alike, joining together to show their work. For people new to design binding this is an ideal opportunity to get involved without the stress of feeling that your work is going to be subject to scrutiny and be judged. As with Tarka, this is not a competition, there are no winners, there are no prizes.....and for that matter, no rules. There will have to be a small fee to cover the cost of the exhibition when you send in your book next year……not sure yet what it will be....but it will be minimal. This year, rather than select a particular edition of the book, you are free to use any version you like so there should be no problem for anybody to get hold of a copy. The most popular choice to date is the 1968 Folio Society edition illustrated by Peter Reddick. Copies on the internet seem very reasonably priced. The plan is to take the book apart and completely rebind it to the best of your ability as a design binding. Every book then, will be different and reflect the individual binders ‘take’ on the story. Would anyone interested in taking part please let me know so that I can send further details. John Jameson Cotswold Bookbinders john
