Prepared Starch Paste is mostly used for pasting leather whereas PVA tends to be used for cloth and paper. Prepared starch paste is also good for using with lens tissue and japanese papers when carrying out paper repairs.

There are two different PVAs. PVAM155 is a general purpose PVA used for paper, cloth etc. PVAM218 is a reversible PVA and tends to be used on books where, in the future, someone may want to undo your work. General purpose PVA can be very difficult to undo and almost always results in fairly significant damage to the paper. Reversible PVA can be undone with minimal damage to the paper. PVAM218 is suitable for paper, cloth etc.

A PVA/Paste mix is used for putting down endpapers. By adding paste to PVA you get more manoeuvrability time. Therefore if your endpaper hasn’t gone down in quite the right place you get a short time in which you can slide it into place.
