Klucel G is a non-ionic cellulose ether with a remarkable combination of properties making it of great interest to the book conservator.

Klucel G is mostly used by bookbinders to consolidate old leather, when applied to powdered leather it will reduce the powdering and extend the life of the leather. Frequently used on leathers with "red rot", although this will not reverse the rot it will consolodate the leather giving it a much improved appearance and texture although it can cause a slight darkening of the leather.

A 4% solution is recommended. For use on leather the Klucel G should be dissolved in alcohol (i.e. ethanol / isopropanol). If you treat old leather never use water as this will cause the leather to considerably darken.

Use a soft brush to apply Klucel G solution onto your leather.

pH (11/2% solution) 5.0 8.5. Ash content (calculated as Na2SO4): 0.5% maximum, silica free. Viscosity (2% solution) : 150 400MPAS. soluble in water below 38°C. Insoluble in water above 40°C). Soluble in many polar organic solvents e.g. methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol (95%). Insoluble in toluene, xylene, trichloethylene. Highly surface active. Extremely flexible without plasticisers in films and coatings.
